Last Friday we held our first ever St Francis of Assisi Duathlon. We didn't know how many students we would have sign up for this event, so we were really excited when we had over 50 students who were keen to participate.
The students took off in waves and were not only up against the other competitors in their age groups, but one of the hottest days we have had all year.
All of the competitors displayed outstanding perseverance and some waves were a battle right down to the last lap of the run.
We had great support from all of our spectators, including the other students who came out to watch some of the racing. We are looking forwarding to seeing even more students competing in this event next year and are hoping to open it up to all age levels in 2018.

This event will take place at Ruapuna Raceway on Monday 27th March. More information on this event for the parents of those competing can be found below. It would great if you could fill this Google Form in by Friday 24 March:
The final check in time for this event is 9.15am, and the race briefing will commence immediately after this. The first race will start as soon as possible after the briefing.
The students are encouraged to wear sensible shorts for biking in and their school PE top while competing. Students will also need to take suitable clothing to wear before and after their event and food to last them the day.
We are hoping that parents will be able to arrange transport for athletes and their bikes to and from Ruapuna Raceway. If you are unable to arrange transport for your child please let us know and we will see what we are able do to help.
The distances the children will run and bike around are:
- 9 - 10 Years Boys & Girls = Run 2km - Bike 6km - Run 1km
- 11 - 12 Years Boys & Girls = Run 2km - Bike 9km - Run 2km
The following are the race rules provided by Primary Sports Canterbury:
1. Cycle helmets approved to Snell, ANSI or NZ Standards must be worn and done up at all times when competitors are in charge of their bike. There is to be no drafting and no use of aero bars, this will result in disqualification if not adhered to.
2. Assistance other than from race officials and medical personnel will result in disqualification.
3. Race officials and medical personnel have the right to remove competitors from the race.
4. All road rules and marshal’s instructions must be observed. The course will be marked and marshalled. A car will follow the last runner.
5. No drinks are to be given during the race.
7. No bikes are to be removed from the transition area until the last race is completed. This could result in disqualification.
8. No video cameras or cameras are allowed in the transition area.
9. Competitors enter at their own risk.
10. The Race Director’s decision is final.
10. ALL COMPETITORS MUST REPORT IN AND ATTEND THE RACE BRIEFING.
